EXCLUSIVE: “I have gone from recording two songs a week to two a year,”- Shaan on getting fewer movie songs
Indian playback singer Shaan has given many blockbusters during the peak of his career in various Indian languages. During the early 2000s, the singer made a mark with songs from films like Dil Chahta Hai, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Fanaa, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Munnabhai M.B.B.S and countless others. However, for a long time, the singer has not lent his voice to any Bollywood film track. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Shaan explains why he does not get film songs any more.
When asked about the absence of his voice from Bollywood films, Shaan said, “This is a thing of perception. My answer to this is such that, at the time when I was at the peak of my career, my behaviour or my attitude might have upset some people. And this has happened with several artists that when you are going through a good phase, you take a lot of things for granted, you take a lot of people for granted. You have a kind of arrogance that when you go through a bad phase, you will have to face a repercussion for the same. But, it's not for me to say, but you can ask anyone, I never indulged in that kind of behaviour. But along with it if the voice deteriorates, even that is a problem. But whatever I sang last, or anytime it was not that I haven't been successful in recording it well. It has all got decent amount of success. It has never been like Shaan has ruined our song.”
“I really do not have an answer to what this is. All I can understand is that today you have singers who have certain recall value because they ruled once, and you wish to revisit that. I am stuck somewhere in between. I am not from today’s age nor am I from yesteryear. So, I think the recall value is less and the new heroes today they wish they have younger and newer voices. Not as much as the voice, but at least the person who is singing it. I have sung for the dad's of today's heroes and back then I was young. I think there is a connection with that generation, maybe that is the reason I don't get many songs,” he further said.
