On Monday, the Central government of India announced that every citizen above the age of 18 will be eligible for COVID vaccination from May 1. It was also announced that vaccine manufacturers can also sell 50% produce to state governments.
Today, the Serum Institute of India, the biggest vaccine manufacturers in the country, revealed the pricing of their vaccine. As earlier, they will continue to sell the vaccine to the Centre at Rs. 150 but it will be sold to the state government at Rs. 400 and for Rs. 600 to private hospitals. The announcement led to a serious debate on the pricing system on social media.
Bollywood actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar also questioned the difference in pricing of the vaccine doses. "Can a spokesperson for the @SerumInstIndia please help us understand why states should not get Covishield at the same price as the centre?? And if they have issued a statement citing reasons, could someone please share a link re the same. Thank you,” he tweeted.
